Erring b’gays warned: Segregate waste well

By Paul Rillorta

BAGUIO CITY – Mayor Mauricio Domogan has warned residents here last week to comply with city policies on waste segregation.

The mayor has directed barangay chiefs to strictly ensure compliance to the no segregation, no collection policy and ordered barangay officials to collectively prosecute residents who still refuse to follow rules.

“Barangay officials should facilitate the conduct of massive information and education campaign in the different areas of their barangays to let residents know the existing policy”.

A report from the City Environment and Parks Management office solid waste management division revealed 21 barangays still do not practice waste segregation.

Among the areas mentioned include parts of Camp 7, Camp 8, East Modernsite, Lower Magsaysay up to city limit, Cresencia Village (Bokawkan Road), Naguilian Road, MRR Queen of peace, Dominican-Mirador, Purok 6 and 8 of Asin Barangay, Camdas Subdivision, Dizon Subdivision, Alfonso Tabora, Trancoville, Harrison Brgy., ABCR (Lower A. Bonifacio), Campo Filipino, Quezon Hill Proper, Victoria Village, Vicinity of City Market especially Upper Magsaysay and corner Maharlika Building, Honeymoon-Holy Ghost near the bridge and AZCKO.

Public services officer DominadorUrbanozo reported garbage in these areas were not collected due to indiscriminate dumping of mixed waste as reported by different team leaders.

The mayor said proper sanctions can be filed against persons who are caught throwing mixed wastes and added it is unfair for those who follow the policy of segregating their waste while a few still do not.

He said residents can report the names of persons who still dump mixed wastes in collection areas so they can be prosecuted under existing laws.

“Let us continue to work together to solve the problem and prevent further complications,” he said.

Domogan said barangay officials should optimize the use of the materials Recovery Facilites (MRF’s) located in the various barangays for segregation and sorting stations and advice their constituents of the same.

“The city is doing its best to collect garbage in every barangay but please be responsible enough and comply with the segregation policy,” he said.
