2 dead in Sta. Cruz Ilocos Sur mishap
STA. CRUZ, Ilocos Sur – Two persons were killed while seven others were injured after a multi-cab rammed a tricycle here in Barangay Turod, Sta. Cruz Monday.

Police identified the fatalities as Johnson Aguinaldo, 46, driver of the multi-cab; and Josephine Jacusalem, 37, a passenger of the tricycle.

The wounded were identified as  Jasmine Elaine Sagado, 22; Blessie Hope, 20; Ike Biligan, 58; Sharmaine Dyan Gacusan, 14; Cristobal Barot, 34; Lito Gaoat, 38 and Seprido Osio 30.

Police said Aguinaldo tried to overtake another vehicle but lost control of the wheel and crashed into the tricycle parked along the roadside.

Mayoral candidate cheats death
SAN MANUEL, Pangasinan — A mayoral candidate of the Liberal Party, under AksiyonDemokratiko, escaped death after he was fired upon while on a house-to-house campaign April 11, police reported.

Eduardo Lopez, mayoral candidate and his vice mayoral tandem Daisy Marcelo Barameda said the incident happened around 4 p.m. last April 11 in Barangay San Juan, here.

Miners die in dynamite blast
ITOGON, Benguet — Two people were killed in an accidental dynamite explosion inside a private mining tunnel here in Barangay Dalicno April 15.

Police identified the victims as Benedicto Mangay-at, 51, and Rodel Binwag, 25, both residents of Barangay Dalicno. Investigation disclosed that the victims activated 11 dynamite sticks while conducting mining operations when two of them did not blow up.

Father, son, cousins drown in Pangasinan
LINGAYEN, Pangasinan,– A father and his son and two others drowned in separate incidents here in Barangays Maniboc and Estanza morning of April 13.

The fatalities were identified as DonatoMacam, 44; his son, Damson, 21; Cleomar Justine Verzosa, 14, and his cousin Matthew Pasilao, 19.

Damson was swimming at a beach in Barangay Maniboc when he shouted for help.

His brother, Donnel, tried but failed to save him.

Donnel called their father who rushed to save his son, but they both drowned.

Donato’s body was found immediately but Damson was recovered Monday.

Meanwhile, Verzosa and Pasilao, both of Pembo, Makati City, were swimming  at a beach in Barangay Estanza when a strong current carried Pasilao away.

Pasilao’s brother, Kevin, tried to save him but he, too, nearly drowned.

Army Staff Sergeant BoyetViray saw Kevin drowning and rescued him.

Versoza tried to save Pasilao but he was also carried away by the current.

Meanwhile, the provincial government of Pampanga declared the Pampanga River as a “no swim zone” following the drowning of two children last week in District 4. Police said apart from the kids, five other people had drowned while swimming in the river this year.

Uncle, nephew die in shooting
PAGUDPUD, Ilocos Norte — A man and his nephew were killed by a gunman in Barangay Saud, this town April 13, a police report said.

The fatalities were identified by police as Rudy Dalumay, 45, and his nephew Junel Medina, 17, both residents of Barangay Saud.

Sketchy reports said a gunman suddenly opened fire at the two and then fled. Homicide investigators were still gathering information that could lead to the identification of the suspect and his motive. — Freddie G. Lazaro


Teener commits suicide
SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union — A 17-year-old boy reportedly took his life by driving his motorcycle into a bus along the highway here in Barangay Sevilla April 14.

Harley Luis Munar, of Barangay Parian, died instantly after ramming his motorcycle into the bus driven by Richard Gapasin, 33, of Laoag City.

Police recovered the victim’s mobile phone, which contained messages indicating his plans to end his life for unknown reasons.

2 nabbed for illegal logs
CAMP DANGWA, La Trinidad, Benguet – Two persons were nabbed in the province last week for possession of illegal logs.
            
Due to swift response of Benguet police on information from a concerned citizen, a driver of a Tamaraw FX with plate number PXT 961 was arrested.

He was identified as Lloyd Pulkero Albin, 28, of Tawang, La Trinidad, Benguet. 

His vehicle was found loaded with 22 pieces of pine lumber with a total volume of 110 board feet  valued  at P3, 000.

In Bokod, Benguet, local police confiscated freshly sawn pine lumber valued at P3, 060 while on foot patrol in SitioSalshet, Mangakew, Bobok-Bisal in the town.
            
The arrested driver with the vehicle loaded with lumber were brought to the La Trinidad police station for filing of cases against them while the confiscated lumber were hauled to the Bokod police station.

Army foils transport of illegal lumber
TABUK CITY, Kalinga — The Philippine  Army under the 501st Brigade has foiled transport of 3,000 board feet of illegal lumber at its detachment based here in Barangay Cudal.

In a press report, Lt. Col. Francisco MillariJr, Commander of the Army’s 54th Infantry Battalion (IB) under the 501st Brigade, said his troops stationed at the Cudal detachment flagged down a truck at about 12:30 a.m. April 1 and discovered  its  illegal load.

Investigation conducted by the Army revealed the truck including the illegal lumber belonged to a certain Henry Ganisi of Barangay Bunut, Paracelis, Mountain Province.

The truck was on its way to Tabuk City, when it was stopped by elements of the 54th IB in Cudal, the report showed.

The army turned-over the contraband to Paracelis Community Environment and Natural Resources Officer  Florencio Balog-ang.

Apprehending officers had  submitted their own report to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources - (DENR) Cordillera Regional Office about the incident.
