CITY - - Baguio’s “IBAGIW” 2020 Creative City Festival is on after its
launching on Nov. 6 until the end of the month.
The City Government of Baguio, in partnership with the Baguio Arts and Crafts Collective Inc. with the support of the Department of Tourism and the Department of Trade and Industry and Baguio Tourism Council formally launched the event in a Kapihan media forum here.
City officials led d by Mayor Benjamin Magalong and Councilors Lourdes Tabanda and Elaine Sembrano were joined by Festival Chairperson Maria Venus Tan, National Artist Kidlat Tahimik, BTC chairperson Gladys Vergara, DOT - CAR OIC Regional Director Jovita Ganongan and DTI – CAR regional director Myrna Pablo, in promoting the Ibagiw 2020.
Now on its third year, the Creative City Festival aims to provide opportunities for Baguio artists, artisans and cultural workers to showcase and uplift their craftsmanship, increase the positive reputation of Baguio as an inspiring city, and raise awareness, interest and purchases for Baguio’s creative products.
With this year’s theme, “Breathe in Baguio”, Tan said this community celebration by artists and artisans of Baguio aims to inspire communities in this times of hardship, for the city residents and visitors have something to be inspired of or simply “breathe in” amid the challenges of the COVID – 19 pandemic.
“Through the IBAGIW art exhibitions, creative crawls, nature walks and artisan fairs, we hope to breathe new life into our Creative City and inspire courage to face challenges, hope for a better future and gratitude for the community and environment that sustain us”, Tan added.
Magalong said events and activities for the festival were well - planned and will be safely conducted as he urged the people of Baguio to do their part by strictly adhering to the minimum health requirements and safety protocols needed to protect themselves.
Adapting to the new normal, the festival is making use of a mix of virtual and physical platforms.
The lined up activities include the Creative and Nature Crawls (starts at 8am) on all Saturdays and Sundays of the month in various venues including Baguio Convention Center, MuseoKordillera (UP Baguio), Sunshine Park (4 hours); Botanical Garden, PilakSilvercraft, Camp John Hay (Forest Bathing)Ili – likha Artists’ Watering Hole, Oh My Gulay (5.5 hours); Easter Weaving, Tam-awan Village, Maryknoll Ecological Sanctuary (4 hours); Mirador Hill, BenCab Museum and Venus Garden (6 hours).
Other activities include Mandeko Kito: Artisanal market every Saturdays and Sundays at the UP Baguio Oblation Grounds; Free “Crafternoons” at VIVISTOP Baguio on Nov. 11 and 18 (1- 3pm) and Nov. 25 (4 – 6pm); “Art in the Park” at Sunshine Park (8am – 5 pm) on Nov. 21 – 22 and Nov. 28 – 30, and Creative Innovative Skills Training/Seminar for artists and artisans at the Sarmiento Hall of UP Baguio on Nov. 23 – 24.
Scheduled competitions are Gardening for a Better Baguio Search; Crafts Competition at Baguio Convention Center wherein opening and judging are set on Nov. 11; Contemporary Art Exhibition of Baguio artist also at the Convention Center; Crafts and Wood Carving Competition Exhibits at the Convention Center and BenCab Museum (Nov.13 – Dec. 12).
Activities that will be livestreamed via facebook include “PechaKucha” by VIVISTOP Baguio on Nov. 19 (6 – 9pm) and the launching of the “Children’s story book on Cordillera weaving and learning tool kits” at MuseoKordilyera on Nov. 20 (3 – 4pm), opening program for the Arts in the Park (9am, Nov. 20) and the Anido Artist/Artisan Day and Closing Ceremonies (4 – 6pm, Nov. 30).
