BAGUIO CITY -- The
Baguio City Police Office reported significant increases in index and non-index
crimes committed in this summer capital first quarter five months this year
compared to the same period last year.
A total of 18 rape cases were recorded first semester this year but lower by six cases compared to same period last year.
BCPO director Col. Glen Lonogan said index crimes increased by 51 cases or 37 percent from January to June this year compared to the same period last year.
Three most common index crimes in the city were theft with 63 cases, higher by 28 incidents compared to same period last year.
Physical injuries was second with 30 recorded incidents, which increased by 20 compared to first six months last year.
For non-index crimes, Lonogan said that there were 287 cases recorded during first six months this year which was 17 cases or seven percent higher compared to crimes during same period last year.
Non-index crimes included violation of special laws such as cases for violation of Republic Act 9165 or the "Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002," violence against women and children, child abuse and related crimes.
Lonogan noted efforts of police in intensifying campaign against illegal drugs paid off through buy-bust operations.
He added 96 percent of all incidents reported during the first semester this year were filed in court where 57 percent was solved.
The first semester of this year was the aftermath of the two-year Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, he said.
