Politically motivated’: Blast hits La Union mayor's convoy; two cops injured

NAGUILIAN, La Union – The mayor here said the explosion which hit his convoy here night of March 25 wherein two police officers were hurt was politically motivated.

This, as police are still trying to establish identities of perpetrators f the blast.

PO2 Joel Ago and PO1 Ramil Castro sustained injuries on their arms and were brought to the Naguilian District Hospital.

Mayor Reynaldo Flores, who was in his vehicle followed by the patrol car, said he was the target of the attack.

“I just don’t know what the real motive is but I think this is politically motivated,” Flores said.

He added political opponents could have been behind the attack.

Investigation showed the patrol car driven by PO3 Moises Rivera was cruising Barangay Tudingan en route to the town proper when the explosion occurred around 6 p.m. that day, injuring Ago and Castro and heavily damaging the police vehicle.

Police investigators said an improvised explosive caused the blast.

Senior Supt. Ramon Purugganan, La Union police director, has ordered Chief Insp. Efren Geraban, Naguilian police chief, to thoroughly investigate the incident.
