68 massacred dogs seized in La Union

PUGO, La Union -- A total of 68 slaughtered dogs, weighing 640 kilograms, were seized by the police in a checkpoint here Wednesday while being transported to Baguio City.


Police identified the owner of the dog meat, loaded in a closed van en route to the Pines City, as Anson Cayat of Barangay Dengsi–Tawang, La Trinidad, Benguet.

Authorities said the 68 dogs came from Calabarzon were slaughtered in Pozorrubio town in Pangasinan.

Police said Cayat was invited to the Pugo town police station where he was detained while a case for violation of Republic Act No. 8485 or the Animal Welfare Act was being prepared against him.

The confiscated dog meat was immediately burned and buried in Pugo town in the presence of local officials and representatives from the Department of Agriculture. -- PNA
