LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – A local court sentenced two dog meat traders here to a year in prison after finding them guilty of violating the Animal Welfare Act.

Victorino Montano and Ricardo de Luna were also ordered to pay a fine of P125,000 each.

The two dog meat traders, who were flagged down at a checkpoint in Kennon Road in Baguio City on June 10 for not wearing seatbelts, were arrested after police found 25 heads of dogs weighing around 250 kilos in their vehicle.

At least a dozen commercial restaurants in this city and nearby La Trinidad serve dog meat which the two were suspected as suppliers.
