SAN CARLOS CITY, Pangasinan —Mayor Julier Resuello of this
city is planning to bid for a Guinness World Record for the biggest jackfruit
found in Barangay Palaming, here.
The city is abuzz with the jackfruit tree in the farm of
former Councilor ElpidioFermin because it bears probably the biggest jackfruit
in the world.
It weighs 99.2 pounds (45 kilos) and measures 29 inches
(73.66 cm) long and 53.14 inches (135 cm) in circumference, surpassing the
world’s existing record for the biggest jackfruit which is only 22.65 inches
(57.5 cm) long and 47.76 inches (121.31 cm) in circumference in Hawaii, USA.
The jackfruit is an aromatic, fleshy fruit renowned for its
delicious taste.
We all enjoy eating jackfruit when it ripens and often is
stuffed in the Filipino delicacy “turon” which is “saba” (Cardaba banana)
wrapped in “lumpia” wrapper rolled in sugar and then fried.
The jackfruit has many health benefits as proven in
laboratories to contain vitamins A and C, thiamin, riboflavin, calcium,
potassium, iron, sodium, zinc and niacin.
It is also used in traditional medicine and recommended by
health buffs and nutritionists for its low caloric content: 100 grams of
jackfruit only contains 94 calories.
