OWWA program helps Covid-affected OFWs

BAGUIO CITY --The Dept. of Labor and
Employment, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration and partner agencies
is providing assistance to Overseas Filipino Workers whose work are affected by
Covid-19 pandemic.
OWWA – CAR Overseas Workers Welfare Officer III Margie Ungson bared this during a DOLE-CAR led press conference here last week, saying assistance is in the form of financial, educational and repatriation.
Ungson said the Abot Kamay ang Pagtulong (AKAP) program offers a one – time financial assistance of P10,000 for repatriated/job-displaced OFWs or “Balik - Mangagawa” (OFW returnees) who failed to return to their jobsite due to COVID – related reasons such as travel ban or restriction.
As of December 5 OWWA – CAR data, Ungson said there are already a total of 4,994 applications submitted to their office for AKAP of which 4,158 were approved. Of the approved applications, 4,021 already received their cash assistance.
Under Bayanihan 1, DOLE provided funding for the 2,018 beneficiaries while OWWA also funded the assistance of 1,750 more beneficiaries.
For Bayanihan 2, DOLE has an allocation of P10 million for AKAP. So far, 250 beneficiaries have already received their cash assistance and 50 more applications are endorsed for funding by OWWA – CAR, Ungson added.
For educational assistance programs, OWWO III Lulu Estocapio informed that the EASE or Educational Assistance through Scholarships in Emergencies offers P10,000 per year for a maximum of four years to one child of OWWA active - member OFW affected by the COVID pandemic. She said 47 beneficiaries already received their educational assistance for this academic year.
The DOLE also recently partnered with the Commission on Higher Education for the Tabang or Tertiary Education Assistance for Dependents of COVID – affected OFWs, which offers a one – time P30, 000 educational cash aid for qualified beneficiaries. OWWA – CAR already endorsed 53 applications to DOLE – CAR for final approval and funding, Estocapio shared.
OWWA, in partnership with other government agencies also have the “Uwian na Program” that provides assistance to returning OFWs in going home to their provinces or residences.
Edgar Laigo. OWWA – CAR “Uwian na Program” focal person, shared that thru the OASIS (OFW Assistance Information System), an online registration system that returning OFWs can access from their jobsite and once registered, OFW can be assisted by the program.
Assistance to OFWs also include free swabbing and RT – PCR test from the Philippine Coast Guard, temporary billeting at Department of Tourism – OWWA accredited temporary quarantine facilities such as hotels and other accommodation and provision of transportation in going home.
