SAN JUAN, La Union — The Department of Public Works and Highways constructed a dike here, one of flood-prone areas in the Philippines.
Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar said the dike will ensure safety of residents and their property from damage brought by typhoons and rapid rise of flood waters.
By preventing flooding, Villar added, the dike forces the river to flow more quickly and with greater force.
In a report submitted to the DPWH chief, the La Union 1st District Engineering Office said the 70.8-linear meter concrete dike was constructed with budget of P4.95 million from the 2021 General Appropriations Act.
The project will serve as protection against destruction of houses, livelihood and possible loss of lives, Villar said.
“The construction of flood mitigation structures that aims to mitigate and minimize the effects of floods along low-lying and coastal areas is part of the DPWH mandate for the welfare of the people,” he added.
With this dike, according to Villar, “Residents living near the creek of Barangay Ili Sur in San Juan will be able to sleep soundly at night knowing that their families and property are safe from severe damage that can be caused by flash floods.
