Council mulls relocation

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- The municipal council is studying relocation of the controversial chicken dung trade here following complaints of affected residents who said its foul odor and among other matters had affected their health.
Vice Mayor Roderick Awingan told media the issue was referred to the committee on laws which is expected to render a report anytime.
He said the Shilan Chicken Dung Truckers and Traders Association sought reconsideration of the decision of the local government to remove the chicken dung trade in the municipality.
The council is consider separate opposing petitions from a group of residents and Barangay Council.
Barangay Council leaders support continuation of the dung trade business.
"The council will deliberate on the matter in their next regular session with the hope the body will have a collective decision on the chicken dung trade which had been the subject of numerous complaints from the directly affected residents living near the area where the business is being done," Awingan said.
The Sept. 30 deadline set by the municipal council for the dung business to relocate was deferred upon reconsideration that measures would be adapted to mitigate its foul odor.
The residents' group seeking relocation said the municipal government should use the Court of Appeals ruling as the basis.
The CA declared the dung operations a nuisance and compromises the health of residents.
Chicken dung is being used by vegetable farmers as organic fertilizer for their crops because it is more affordable than commercial fertilizers.
