BAGUIO CITY — The supposed holiest place in this mountain resort city was not spared from thieves who took off with an antique golden chalice worth over P500,000 kept in the Baguio Cathedral sacristy last week.

Supt. Agripino Javier, city police director, said altar boy Christian Dayao relayed the information that the golden chalice was missing to Nicolai Quafano, the Cathedral’s organist to seek guidance on what to do about the sudden disappearance of the relic.

The chalice is symbolic of the vessel which Jesus used during the Last Supper to serve wine. It is also described to have been used to collect the blood of Jesus when he was crucified.

Quafano reported to police the missing chalice which has an engraving of human, eagle, cow and lion and angel’s wings.

The missing item has four gems but it was not immediately known what types of gems were inscribed on it. – Dexter A. See
