Poultry raisers hit ‘monopoly’ of big companies

CABANATUAN CITY — Backyard raisers of poultry chicken in Central Luzon and even in Mindanao are assailing what they called an alleged monopoly by multi-national companies in the distribution of chicken meat in the market.

Eddie Alambra, a small entrepreneur in Central Luzon, said if the oil sector has the so called “Big Three” oil companies, they too have in their industry the existence of three companies allegedly controlling the distribution and pricing of chicken and other poultry products.

Alambra said major players in the poultry industry are violating the order of President Aquino for a free and fair competition in the food and beverage industry so that those belonging in the underprivileged sector can have access to it.

Alambra along with several other marginal raisers of poultry chicken appealed to President Aquino and the Department of Agriculture to look into the alleged monopoly in their sector.

He said major players in the poultry industry are dictating the pricing and volume of chicken meat in market places all over the country.
