DPWH commits to hasten Baguio City roads’ repair

BAGUIO CITY – Mayor Mauricio Domogan appealed to the public to bear with the inconvenience caused by the implementation of various road projects here even as he assured that the Dept. of Public Works and Highways has given its commitment to the city to fast-track and complete the projects before the Baguio Flower Festival staging next month.

The mayor said Baguio City District Engineering Office Engineer Ireneo Gallato served notice to begin implementing 18 road improvement works in various areas of the city this week to ensure completion of these projects before the Panagbenga.

He said Gallato committed to time the implementation of the projects properly this year to avoid conflict with the scheduled events and activities of the city and prevent inconvenience that will discourage tourists from coming up to the city for the said events.

“I hope the DPWH will comply with its commitment to fast-track the projects to prevent further inconvenience and I hope that our people will also understand the need to implement these projects,” the mayor said.

The road works are located in Governor Pack Road 1 and 2, Kayang St., Leonard Wood Road, Quirino Highway, Harrison Road, Abanao Road, Abanao Ext., Chanum St., Andres Bonifacio St., Government Center, M. Roxas St., PMA-Cut-off Road, PMA Road and Marcos Highway.
Residents of Marcos Highway voiced out complaints over transport difficulties after the road repair works were started last week in the area.

Baguio public transport group head Perfecto Itliong Jr. expressed doubt that the 30-day target completion will be met by the contractor of the said project and suggested that the contractor implement a round-the-clock work to ensure that the deadline will be met.

He said the traffic management measures should be implemented in the areas affected particularly along Marcos Highway to allow smoother traffic flow and ease the commuters’ burdens while the project is being undertaken.

Itliong led a transport leaders’ consultative forum last Thursday to discuss the city’s traffic situation in face of the said road improvements. – A Refuerzo
