Stranded dolphin rescued in Cagayan

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya – A stranded dolphin has been rescued by fishermen off Cagayan’s northern coast.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) regional office in Tuguegarao City said the Fraser’s dolphin (Lagenodelphishosei), measuring 2.26 meters in length, is now recovering from wounds at its fishery station in Claveria town.

Dr. Jovita Ayson, BFAR director for Cagayan Valley, said the mammal was found stranded by fishermen along the South China Sea coast in Pamplona town’s Barangay Allasitan on Feb. 21.

The dolphin, listed as one the world’s most threatened sea species, had bite-like injuries as well as scratches on its left pectoral flipper, head and tail when rescued by the fisherfolk.

“Although the animal has lost its balance due to wounds on its flipper, it remains to be alert and is receiving medication and food,” BFAR said.
