BANGUED, Abra – They used to peddle drugs. Now, they are selling hollow blocks. Sixteen drug surrenderees from San Juan, Abra decided to turn their lives around by going through training in hollow blocks making and are now supplying the province with the construction material.
The journey of the 16 drug surrenderees started when the San Juan Municipal Police Station tapped the services of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Abra provincial office for an orientation/advocacy of TESDA programs to the different barangays.
After the training, the group had an initial production of 832 pieces of concrete hollow blocks and sold it to various business establishments and private individuals.
They earned P65,748.00 from their sales and used the money to improve their production facilities such as putting shades in their work areas, water source connection, and the purchase of a screen for gravel.
The group is now one of the suppliers of hollow blocks in the municipality of San Juan, Abra and is now in the process of completing orders for 2,650 pieces.
The training was conducted through the community-based training program of TESDA-Abra, and coordinated by Marietta Ta-a, PESO Manager and Community Training and Employment Coordinator (CTEC) of San Juan, Abra under the training-cum-production delivery.
Maricon Taclaoan, community-based training person of PO-Abra said, “We hope that they value the chance the government gave them and continue on the right path and share the skills training they have acquired with their family.         TESDA is always open and will offer programs especially to our special clients.”
