LA TRINIDAD, Benguet - - As the Covid- 10  pandemic rages,  the African Swine Fever is gradually spreading in the province with the town of Bokod  recording some cases.
ASF cases this year were earlier reported   in La Trinidad, Itogon, Tuba and Buguias.
Dr Miriam Tiongan,  head of the Provincial Veterinary Office,  said the first ASF case in Bokod was recorded late last month in     Gurell affecting 16 sows,  then in Bangao affecting 25 sows .The latest confirmed case was an astray pig in Bila.
Tiongan said based on inspection, the alleged source of the disease were live pigs which were drowned along the Agno River in Bokod.
Among the measures being undertaken by the local government in controlling the disease include the activation of quarantine operations for the inspection of livestock entering the barangays, ongoing checkpoint along Pito, and surveillance and information education efforts.
An ordinance in the control of the animal diseases including ASF is being mulled as another measure.
Tiongan appreciated the local government of Bokod for their support and cooperation in addressing the problem as she appealed to hog raisers, consumers and local officials for their cooperation in the prevention and control of the disease as they cannot do it alone.
She  said the provincial government will continue to extend financial assistance with the remaining allotted amount for the succeeding set of qualified hog raisers affected by ASF. A biosecurity measure, an assessment tool as basis in releasing assistance to those affected, will soon be floated to livestock and poultry raisers across municipalities, she said.
Tiongan underscored intensive information education and enhanced biosecurity measures as control and preventive measures. (JDP/SCA-PIA-CAR)
