Baguio: 7th Covid-19 death in January

BAGUIO CITY – The City Health Service Office reported
the seventh death this January due to Covid-19 on Wednesday and 19 new
cases and 22 recoveries.
The CHSO said a 41-year-old female was admitted at the Baguio City General Hospital and Medical Center on Dec.30 but died on Jan.6.
At the start of the month, the city recorded a total of 72 deaths (1.79%); 304 active cases (7.56%), and 3,644 (90.65%) recoveries from the total confirmed cases of 4,020 since March, 2020.
Mayor Benjamin Magalong said the city is preparing for the new strain of the Covid-19 which is said to be a fast-spreading variant.
He said the city will focus on improving its surge capacity by increasing the bed capacity of the community isolation units it has established at the course of the pandemic to 1,000 by the end of January.
Apart from the isolation beds in five hospitals with Covid-19 response capability, the city presently has a total of 654 beds in its six community isolation facilities — the Baguio City Community Isolation Unit at the Sto. Niño Medical Center, the Baguio Teachers’ Camp Community Isolation Unit (Roxas Hall), the Baguio Teachers’ Camp Isolation Unit (Superintendent’s Quarters and Hernandez Hall), V Dorm 1, V Dorm 3, and Ferionni Apartments.
Covid-19 has a reproduction number of R0 or infectivity rate of 0.4 while the new strain is at 0.7 which means that it has the ability to infect more people.
