Ifugao town ups anti-ASF rules; pork ban slated

LAMUT, Ifugao – The mayor here recently
created the local government’s African Swine Fever Task Force to safeguard the
local swine industry.
Mayor Mariano Buyagawan, Jr. said the outbreak of ASF in several provinces in Luzon including the Cordillera Administrative Region poses an imminent threat that may lead to the compulsory culling of about 7,000 heads of swine in the municipality.
The task force is chaired by the mayor with the municipal agriculturist as vice chairman with some municipal department heads, all punong barangays and the Sangguniang Bayan committee chairman on agriculture as members.
The ASF-TF shall temporary ban the entry of live pigs, fresh pork/pork and products in the municipality and bringing of fresh pork and taking out of food containing pork products by the public.
It will ban also for the meantime the buying and selling of imported pork in barangays including carrying pork products to the municipality by drivers, conductors and inspectors.
It will direct hog owners to stop swill feeding of food craps to pigs.
Buyagawan also included the technical support teams in the task force like rapid action team, surveillance team, quarantine team and census team.
These are regular members of the ASF-TF who shall be responsible for maintaining the swine industry in Lamut. – PIA Ifugao
