Cops destroy P52.78-M marijuana in Kalinga

TINGLAYAN, Kalinga – Anti-illegal drug
enforcers in the Cordillera region have destroyed P52.78 million worth of marijuana in two
operations this month, regional police said.
Capt. Marnie Abellanida, Police Regional Office - Cordillera chief information officer, said P40.78 million worth of marijuana was uprooted and burned here May 6 to 9.
Abellanida said the marijuana was discovered in three plantation sites with a total land area of 8,900 square meters on Mt. Chumanchill, Barangay Loccong.
He said about 88,400 fully-grown marijuana plants valued at P17.68 million were discovered and destroyed in the series of operations led by the Kalinga Police, along with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 15.
Abellanida noted that aside from the marijuana plants, operatives also found 165 kg. of dried marijuana leaves with an estimated street value of P19.8 million; 15 kg. of marijuana stalks valued at P3.3 million; and 60 kg. of marijuana seeds, for which authorities did not give an estimated value.
The operation, he said, was part of the continuing anti-illegal drugs operation of the region aimed at reducing the supply of illegal drugs in the country.
On May 116, police and anti-narcotics agents also burned an estimated P2 million worth of fully grown marijuana plants in a remote area here in Barangay Bugnay.
Monitoring of local police and town officials led to the discovery of the marijuana plantation in said barangay. Operatives of Kalinga Police Provincial Office, RID and RIU 14, with Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency joined forces the eradication operation.
