Carnap incidents down in Cordi due to public support

BAGUIO CITY- Carnapping incidents have gone down in this city and other parts of the Cordillera due to vigilance of the people on the proliferation of illegal activities.

Supt. Jesus Cambay, Jr., regional director of the Traffic Management Group bared this, adding the provision of state-of-the-art equipment coupled with public support and cooperation were the secrets in stopping carnapping.

While admitting that the city and other remote areas in the region were the favorite dumping ground of carnapped vehicles from the lowlands, Cambay said the introduction of the Vehicle Information Management System (VIMS) greatly helped them in tracking the history of a vehicle in seconds.

It was learned that the TMG has its own data base of registered vehicles as well as “hot cars” which allows them to identify whether or not a motor vehicle has dubious documents.

At the same time, Cambay said the cooperation of the people in reporting the presence of abandoned vehicles in their sight also helped the law enforcement agency recover car napped vehicles being brought to the city.

But he added they have to exert more effort in curbing carnapping incidents outside the region because proper coordination is needed to easily track down the whereabouts of a missing vehicle or “hot cars.”

Despite the insufficient number of personnel, Cambay said they performed their tasks especially in the prevention of carnapping incidents in the region.

For the first six months of this year, the regional TMG said there were no carnapping incidents in the region.

Aside from its anti-carnapping drive, the TMG is also involved in implementation of traffic rules and regulations along national roads and the campaign against the proliferation of colorum vehicles that contribute to worsening traffic congestion and pollution.

Cambay appealed to the public for continuous support and cooperation by reporting to their office the presence of abandoned vehicles in their areas as well as vehicles with doubtful documents so that they could act on it immediately. -- Dexter A. See
