270 kilos of dynamited fish seized in La Union

SAN JUAN, La Union - Police seized some 270 kilos of fish caught by dynamite fishing in a checkpoint in San Juan town proper in La Union, Monday.

Senior Insp. Rockie Sahagun, town police chief, identified the arrested fish vendors as Rodolfo Asuncion, 56, and Efren Batara, 52, both of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.

Sahagun said the illegally–caught fish were seized as the suspects failed to show quarantine and transport documents.

“The fish were examined by the town’s fish examiner who certified that these were caught by dynamite fishing,” he said.

The seized shipment, estimated at P64,000, was given to a charitable institution in the province, he added.

Sahagun said that the fish owners paid penalties for violation of the fishery code and were released from police custody. -- PNA
