Bontoc folk hit compost center

BONTOC, Mountain Province -- Concerned residents here are pushing the stoppage of a composting area at the town center citing health concerns aside from foul odor.

Another letter of complaint was received by the municipal government and the Bontoc Market Vendors Association after another group of complainants addressed the same to concerned authorities.

A team from the municipal government inspected the site but have yet to come up with recommendations on the matter.

Complainants met with Mayor PascualSacgaca to discuss the matter and agreed there was need to look for a relocation site such while the municipal nursery located at Lengsad would be a temporary composting area.

Local officials said since the start of the implementation of the project, collectible waste from the four central barangays had been lessened and that the market has the largest volume of waste being collected.

Everyday, the market association reportedly had been monitoring and recording the volume of waste from the market with the use of weighing scale.

Record shows that waste solely collected from the market ranged from 250 to 300 kilos per day.

Despite complaints, BOMARVA president Paula Acofo said the composting site was not a dumping area for garbage but rather a composting area.

She said members of the BOMARVA were persistent and willing to continue the project they have initiated regardless of whatever criticisms.

They said they were certain as they go along, improvement and development of the project shall be realized and soon be appreciated.
