BAGUIO CITY -- The only transmission facility in the country donated a water system for students and faculty as part of their advocacy to develop communities hosting its transmission facilities.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP)  recently inaugurated and turned over a water well and elevated water tanks in the Beckel Elementary School in Barangay Beckel, La Trinidad, Benguet.

On May 30, NGCP officials led by its corporate affairs department manager Nelson Cabangon together with Beckel Elem. School principal Rosalina Laureta and Eastern La Trinidad National High School principal Pablo Khayog Jr. and barangay officials of Beckel led by barangay captain Murphy Quezon, unveiled the marker and made the ceremonial switching of the water system located at the elementary school compound.

According to Lilibeth Gaydowen, NGCP corporate communications and public affairs officer for North Luzon,  the water well and  tank project was implemented in cooperation with the local government of Barangay Beckel, Beckel Neighborhood Multi Purpose Coop. (BNMPC) and the Parent Teacher Community Associations of the Beckel ES and the Eastern La Trinidad NHS.

The BNMPC which holds the water rights in barangay Beckel allowed the construction in the area composed of 14 sitios, 689 households and 3,565 residents.

Gaydowen  said  the turned over project aims to provide additional water supply to more than 800 students and teachers of the primary and secondary schools as the water well and the elevated tanks will augment the schools’ existing water connection with the BNMPC.

The schools are not only catering to residents of Beckel but also  those coming from the neighboring barangays of Ambiong and Shilan in La Trinidad; Pacdal in Baguio City and Sabkil in Itogon.

The school and barangay officials thanked the NGCP for the project.

Khayog said facilities will be maintained by  school officials and students so will have more beneficiaries in the future.

During the program at the school, the students also received note books containing  messages on environment protection, energy saving, recycling and other good messages  about  the environment.

In a statement, NGCP spokesperson Atty. Cynthia Alabanza highlighted the company’s primary goal in the water project.

“All NGCP’s corporate social responsibility programs are geared towards the sustainable development of its host communities – the areas hosting its transmission lines and facilities – and the improvement of the lives of the residents. We saw that Barangay Beckel would greatly benefit from additional water supply and with their support, we were able to provide a stable source for them. They can be assured that NGCP will continuously look for opportunities to support its external stakeholders.”
