SAGADA, Mountain Province --- The sinking road here at barangay Antadao along the Dantay-Sagada road prompted Mountain Province District Engineering Officer Wilbur Likigan to call for an indepth study on earth movements in this eastern part of Sagada.
In a press conference,
Likigan, an engineer, noted some road sections in Antadao cracked when these
were just recently concreted.
Likigan said the observation
of sinking on this part of the national road was earlier forwarded to
the Environmental Management Bureau of the Department of
Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) who suggested that “appropriate”
measures be done.
The MPDEO is currently doing maintenance measures to make the road be passable.
Likigan sees possible relocation
of the road should studies recommend the need.
In said road section, two big rocks fell from
mountain slopes in different dates of this year caused
vehicles to momentarily stop while the fallen rocks were fractured out of
the road way.
In the same stretch of the
thoroughfare, a road upgrading project blasts limestone rocks to widen the way.
The certificate of
non-coverage issued by the EMB to DPWH-MPDEO for the conduct of the road
upgrading project ‘does not exempt the grantee from compliance with
applicable environmental laws’.
It was learned that a municipal ordinance prohibits blasting of limestone rocks in any part of the town of Sagada.
In said press conference, DPWH regional construction
section head engineer Clifton Valencerina said the proposal for an indepth
study shall be forwarded by DPWH to the DENR. It was learned that a municipal ordinance prohibits blasting of limestone rocks in any part of the town of Sagada.
Antadao is a recipient of the core shelter housing assistance program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development where some residential areas were declared as vulnerable to erosion by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau of the DENR.
