ADAMS,
Ilocos Norte -- The vice mayor of this town was wounded in a gun attack on
Tuesday night, but managed to kill the gunman.
Vice Mayor Eric Bawingan was watching
television with his children when Jun Valencia barged in and opened fire at
around 9:30 p.m., said Chief Insp. Dexter Corpuz, Ilocos Norte police
spokesman.
Although
hit, Bawingan grabbed his M16 rifle and
pursued Valencia. The gunman died at the scene.
Bawingan
was brought to the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center for
treatment.
Police
said Valencia was tagged in the killing of municipal treasurer Elpidio Sy in
2010.
The Department of the Interior and Local
Government earlier offered a P90,000 reward for information leading to
Valencia’s arrest.
An investigation is ongoing.
