The Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) of Brookspoint barangay has showcased its projects benefiting the youth in the barangay.
The barangay youth council headed by Van Sanchez, who also serves as vice president of the SK Federation of Baguio announced the pilot conduct of the “Summer Story Class 2022,” a six-day activity-filled session for children 4-8 years old and the opening of the youth center-cum-reading corner for the barangay youth.
Sanchez said 32 children will join the story class starting on July 8 and every Friday until Aug. 19.      Activities include story-telling, arts and crafts, writing skill, reading comprehension, music/dance, personality development and kids’ tour.
The sessions will be facilitated by artist/designer Harold Banario, foreign volunteer Omar Abdulrab, city librarian Easter Pablo, ESL teacher Eprinciel Saysayan, National Youth Commission Regional Head for Region 1 and Cordillera Administrative Region Dr. Sheridan Athena Gajete.

The children will receive free t-shirt uniform, kids’ bag, school supplies and snacks to boot.
Sanchez said the project was conceived with the aim of helping young children adjust to the return of face-to-face classes both mentally and emotionally.
“The project will give our adings an opportunity to have fun while helping them grow both intellectually and emotionally while on school break  at the same time, it will also give us older ones the chance to share our time and talents by participating in a worthwhile and beneficial activity,” Sanchez said.
The youth center and reading corner meanwhile opened last June 9 with the aim of catering to the need for learning and safe space of the youth in the barangay.
Sanchez said the organization used to hold free one-on-one tutoring sessions for children in the barangays to help them cope with their academic requirements but the project was shelved during the pandemic.  The new projects serve as extensions of these learning endeavors.
The barangay SK also sustains projects for the older age groups like the regular talk show tackling issues affecting their sector, anti-drug educational drives, environmental awareness activities through backyard gardening and terrarium-making, among others.
Sanchez said their projects are part of the organization’s thrust to help the youth to focus on education and to reach their full potential as leaders and contributors to nation-building.

Baguio City competitiveness ranking up despite pandemic

BAGUIO CITY – The Dept. of Trade Industry Competitive Bureau lauded Baguio City for showing vast improvement in its competitiveness ranking in 2021 despite the pandemic.
DTI-CB director Lilian Salonga and assistant director Director Jo-Dann Darong said the significance of the city’s feat as the third most improved among 33 HUCs in the 8th Annual Regional Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index (CMCI) “could not be overemphasized” considering the challenges faced by the country.
“The award proves how competitive Baguio City is in propelling the nation’s economic growth.  The city performed well amidst the pandemic and we all know the enormity of the challenges it posed to the country and the world in general.  That the city was able to pull off a remarkable improvement has definitely proven its competitiveness and excellence,” Salonga said.
The officials conferred the city’s award to Mayor Benjamin Magalong as represented by Chief of Staff Felipe Puzon, Councilors Isabelo Cosalan and Phillian Weygan and City Planning and Development Coordinator Donna Tabangin in a program held June 23.
In 2020, the city was 19th most improved and 19th as overall most competitive local government unit in the HUC category.
In 2021, it placed 17th as overall most competitive with its standings in the four pillars as follows: 9th under the economic dynamism pillar from 11th in 2020; 19th in government efficiency from 26th; 24th in infrastructure from 18th; and 14th in resiliency from 26th.
Darong said the city tied with Cebu City in third place for most improved category trailing Tacloban and General Santos cities in second place and Mandaue City in first place.
He said of the 33 HUCs, only five registered improvement.  Worse, 10 HUCs dropped significantly in performance with an average of four notches down and one with an extreme slide of 11 notches.
He said the city’s strength was on local economic growth under the economic dynamism pillar where it ranked first in the sub-category of local economic growth.
Salonga said the city also registered increase in employment opportunities, capacities for health and school services, accommodation capacity, among others.
Gaps needed to be addressed are on the capacity to generate local resources, infrastructure including transportation and road networks, early warning systems, among others.

The city government will make its environmental summit a series to cater to all sectors that have a stake on the issues.
The first in the series will be held on July 8, 1-5 p.m. at the Baguio Convention Center where the city through the Office of the City Planning and Development coordinator (OCPDC) and the City Environment and Parks Management Office (CEPMO) plans to accommodate a large audience of at least 500 to ensure the success of the activity.
The activity will be open to the public who may attend physically or virtually via Zoom or livestreaming at the Public Information Office Facebook page where they can put forward their questions, concerns or suggestions.
The OCPDC said they plan to hold two more sessions, the schedule of which will be announced upon finalization.
Mayor Benjamin Magalong last May 17 directed the summit to gather inputs on to address the critical issues affecting the city’s environment to further guide the city government in its mission to prevent the city from further hurtling towards urban decay.
He asked that participants come from the cross section of the Baguio City community to make for a fruitful summit.
The mayor said he intends to focus on implementing the strategic solutions planned during his first term to address problems besetting the city including the deterioration of the environment resulting to ecological imbalance.
A 2019 study of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) found the city had already breached its carrying capacity or “the number of people, other living organisms, or crops that a region can support without environmental degradation.”
The mayor said it is crucial that the city implement reforms to slow down if not reverse urban decay.
