Kalinga Rep pushes DPWH guarantee on Chico mega dike funds

TABUK CITY -- Kalinga Rep. Allen Jesse Mangaoang urged the Dept. of Public Works and Highways to guarantee funding for the proposed P5.5 billion Chico River mega dike project that will address perennial flooding in the lower villages of this and nearby Pinukpuk town.
Mangaoang, who is on his final term as the province's district representative, said he will talk to incoming Public Works Sec. Manuel Bunoan to ensure funding of the project.
He said the feasibility study of the DPWH Central Office on the proposed mega dike project is complete and the agency had been providing annual appropriations ranging from P100 to 200 million over the past years that allowed piecemeal implementation of the plan.
The lawmaker said primary purpose of the 18-kilometer long and 300-meter wide mega dike is to effectively address flooding in the area.
This will also stop dredging projects which are stop-gap solutions to the problem.
Mangaoang said he will recommend annual allocation of P900 million in the next four to five years to complete construction of the mega dike.
The multibillion mega dike project was conceptualized in 2017 with the DPWH providing an annual appropriation to date but is not sufficient enough to complete the whole project due to the enormous fund required to finalize the structure.
