TABUK CITY, Kalinga -- The local government
is fast-tracking the completion of a P30-million farmers' center that will
serve as a training facility for agriculture industry stakeholders to improve
their knowledge and skills with the latest technology to raise productivity in
the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).
Mayor Darwin Estrañero said the facility will train local farmers improve their produce and income while sustaining the region's food sufficiency in light of the emerging food crisis.
He added that Tabuk will remain an agricultural area amid the rapid conversion of agricultural lands to commercial areas to ensure the stability of rice supply.
Tabuk and some parts of Kalinga are considered the rice granary of the CAR over the past several decades because of the vast tracts of land that serve as production areas for different crops, mostly rice and corn.
Estrañero said the local government is also working on the construction of community irrigation projects in areas that are not serviced by existing irrigation facilities.
He noted that this will also encourage farmers to make use of idle lands which could impact the food supply.
Estrañero said that many local officials and employees from other local governments who conduct benchmarking activities in the city are often surprised that Tabuk is an agriculture-producing area contrary to the impression that it is a commercial and industrial community.
Tabuk is the third-largest city in the country with a land area of more than 700.25 square kilometers. The two largest cities in the country are Davao and Ilagan in Isabela located in Mindanao and Luzon, respectively.
