Man arrested for shooting son who didn’t lend money

SADANGA, Mountain Province – A 51-year-old man was arrested for illegal possession of firearms after he shot his son for not lending him money.

A police report said Peter Cheweran, 29, laborer, of Barangay Belwang here reported to police that his father identified as William Cheweran, 51, resident of same place allegedly shot him with the use of a Cal.45 pistol on August 8.

Based on the initial investigation, at around 6 p.m., August 7, the victim just arrived home after coming from the fields where he along with other residents harvested rice of barangay kagawad Elena Tar-odan.

Upon reaching his house, he saw his father waiting and asking him to lend money but the victim had nothing to give.

The suspect got mad and left the place so the victim took a bath and went to the house of Tar-odan to join other laborers for dinner.

While the victim was about to reach the house of Tar-odan, he was surprised when he heard his father shouting his name angrily and when he looked back, he saw his father aiming a gun at him at very close range and fired it once nearly hitting him in the waist.

The victim and suspect grappled with the firearm until they fell down below the house where neighboring residents intervened to pacify them.

It was further learned that the incident was the second time his father did the same thing to him and also threatening the lives of all his children with the use of the firearm.

The victim told police his father was also keeping a carbine rifle inside his residence prompting the lawmen to apply for a search warrant before Judge Joseph Patna-an of Regional Trial Court.

On August 9, joint police personnel of provincial headquarters and Mountain Province Public Safety Company headed by Senior Insp. Edward Tufay and Insp. Marcial Lopez Valdez served the search warrant at the suspect’s residence.

The suspect was at his residence still in possession of a firearm and arrogantly tried to draw his firearm which prompting lawmen to arrest him and confiscate his Norinco Cal.45 loaded with one magazine with no ammunition.

A search was conducted at the house where one bullet was found.

The suspect and pieces of evidence were brought to the provincial police headquarters in the capital town of Bontoc where he was detained.
