Chinese national loses account to pickpocket

BAGUIO CITY – A Chinese national lost P45,000 worth of belongings Thursday after an alleged pickpocket incident here inside a shoe store along Session Road. According to the victim identified as Xiangyang Xiao, 53, of Beijing China, she and her husband went inside Bok Shoe Store to buy some shoes. Upon paying, they noticed that the back pocket of her blue backpack was opened. Taken from the victim was her cellular phone worth P10,000 containing her bank account worth P35,000. The suspect was unidentified and so they reported the incident to Police Station 7.

The establishment refused to comment but promised to strengthen security measures of the store. The victims, who were billeted in Albergo Hotel, were in the city for a vacation. -- Ian Pajarillaga

US fugitive nabbed in Ilocos Norte faces deportation

LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte - Police operatives arrested a fugitive wanted by the United States (US) federal authorities for two counts of sexual assault in Bacarra town, Tuesday.

Elvin Daduyo Asuncion, 22, US citizen and presently residing in San Simon village, Bacarra, Ilocos Norte was arrested by joint elements of Bureau of Immigration and Deportation (BID), Overseas Criminal Investigations of the US Embassy and Provincial Intelligence Branch of the Philippine National Police.

Supt. Leland Benigno of the Ilocos Norte Police Provincial Office said the suspect will be facing deportation by virtue of a warrant issued by Commissioner Ronaldo Geron of the BID.

Benigno said the service of the warrant is pursuant to the request of the US Embassy to bring the suspect before US laws for the crime of two counts of sexual assault in the second degree stipulated in the arrest warrant issued by Hawaii State circuit court Judge Joseph Cardz with a recommended bailbond of $500,000 or P23 million. – Ariel Paolo Tejada

Illegal recruiter nabbed in manhunt operation

BAGUIO CITY -- An alleged illegal recruiter was nabbed in a manhunt operation of city police here along Abanao Street Feb. 11.

By virtue of a warrant of arrest issued by presiding judge Mona Lisa V. Tiongson-Tabora of RTC Branch 7, suspect Joselyn Manipon Arevalo aka Joy Arevalo, 42, of Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur was arrested  around 4:30 p.m. The suspect is facing two counts of illegal recruitment in large scale, no bail and seven counts of estafa.

Man robs gold shop; arrested after car chase

BAGUIO CITY – Police reported a robbery with intimidation case at buy and sell gold shop in Lakandula Feb. 3. A gun was pointed at the owner where 50,000 pesos in cash was taken from him and 18,700 pesos in cash was also taken from a customer wherein after the hold-up, the owner sought help from the police telling the plate number of the suspect where a car chase took place and the suspect was captured with a Cal. 9mm handgun, a Glock 17, and one Berretta 9mm.

Man found hacked dead in Bakun shanty 

BAKUN, Benguet -- – A man was foud dead in a shanty here Wednesday, believed hacked to death by his drinking mates.

A police report identified the victim as Norvy Bacala Cuyogan, 23,  farmer, here of Barangay Monamon Sur.

Investigation disclosed around 8 a.m. that day, Cuyogan and suspects had a drinking session at Teresitas store in Sitio Datakan, Gambang,  wherein they had a heated argument. At about 3 p.m. of same date, they decided to go home. While the victim and his companions were on their way, the suspects ran to their shanty and took a bolo and tried to hack the victim but the companions of the victim pacified them. The victim went to hide at the shanty of a certain David Tindongan. At about 6 p.m. that day when Tindongan went home to his shanty, he noticed a male person lying on the garden below his shanty so he immediately informed barangay kagawad George Bactao who with his neighbors saw the body of the victim with multiple lacerations on his head and body. The suspects are still unidentified. Victim was not brought to the hospital but was proclaimed dead by Maryjane M. Tayaban, municipal doctor.

  

British hurt by intruders who take his cell phone 

BAGUIO CITY – A British national was hurt Wednesday when still unidentified men broke into his home here along Asin Rd. 

Police said the incident happened around 5:30 a.m. in the house of the victim identified as Roderick Young, 72.

Investigation revealed at about 4 a.m., Young saw three men lurking around his house and when he was about to accost them, they ran exiting  the main door. Later complainant heard noise at their kitchen where he saw a man and tried to subdue him but suspect fought back and hit him with a hard object on his right head and shoulder. The intruder escaped using the  main door. Suspects reportedly broke the glass window to enter the house and took a Nokia 1200 worth P2,000 placed in the living room.

Man in jail for rape issued arrest warrant for rape

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – A man, incarcerated in the municipal jail here for rape, was served another arrest warrant of arrest Wednesday.  He was identified as Orlando Cortez, 30, driver, resident of Middle Rock Quarry, Baguio City for theft. 

The arrest warrant was issued by Glenda T. Ortiz Soriano, presiding judge of Municipal Trial Circuit Court 2 who recommended bail of P20,000.

Man jailed in Paracelis

PARACELIS, Mountain Province – Police arrested a certain Joas Gacayon Tabunnoc, 26, here Wednesday

At SitioBanilag, Barangay Poblacion for violation of Republic Act 9262. Judge Joseph A. Patnaan of Regional Trial Court, issued arrest warrant and recommended bail of P50, for Tabunnoc’s temporary liberty.

Fireman hurt in motorcycle accident

BAGUIO CITY – A fireman was hurt here when he lost control of his motorcycle Wednesday around 12:30 p.m. Ticuan Road, Tetep-an Village Purok 11, Bakakeng Norte. The victim was identified as FP3 Jose Wagayen Dacwag,assigned at Fire Regional Office-Cordillera. Investigation disclosed that the victim was traversing the road when he lost control, causing the motorcycle to topple along the road. The victim was rushed to Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center by Edwin Bang-iBalisong for medical treatment. Victim incurred several abrasions.

42 poll checkpoints set up in Tarlac

ANGELES CITY, – The Tarlac police has put up 42 checkpoints in the province to ensure peaceful and orderly elections in May. 




“We will ensure maximum deployment of policemen in the checkpoints,” Senior Superintendent Alex Sintin, Tarlac police director, said Wednesday.

Sintin said at least 86 guns have been confiscated at these checkpoints since Jan. 10. 
  


He said they are considering placing certain areas, where violence may erupt, on their election watchlist.

In Bayugan, Agusan del Sur, police took over a checkpoint put up by some 20 New People’s Army rebels along the national highway in Sitio Bayanacon in Barangay Mabuhay yesterday.

The rebels had been pulling over vehicles for about 20 minutes when responding members of the Army’s 3rd Special Forces arrived.

“When the soldiers arrived, the communist rebels fled, leaving their paraphernalia behind,” said Capt. Jasper Gacayan, 401st Infantry Brigade spokesman.

Gacayan said the checkpoint set up by the rebels was near the headquarters of the 3rd Special Forces Battalion.  – RaymundCatindig, RicSapnu 

                                              

Cop dies in Nueva Ecija road mishap

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga – A police officer died while his wife was injured when their motorcycle collided with a sport utility vehicle along Barangay Concepcion in Cabanatuan City on Feb. 6.

Police Officer 1 Florian Escoban Jr., 29, and his wife, Nierilyn, were on their way to the Cabanatuan City police station when they were hit by a Toyota Fortuner (TMO-205) being driven by Derrik Mark Ramento, 36, a resident of Barangay Kapital. 

Escoban died on the way to a hospital. – RicSapnu         

Pickup truck lands sideways; 3 injured

BAGUIO CITY -- Three were injured  after a pickup  truck turned turtle and rested  sideways here along  Purok 15, Irisan, Feb. 9.

The Toyota Hi-lux Pick-up with plate number FEC 190 was driven by student Brandon S. Yubos, 19, of Central Fairview. According to the driver, they were cruising down the said highway heading towards the lowland. He tried to overtake another vehicle and eventually lost control of the steering wheel.

 The driver and passenger Normer Ringor,student, 19, of Central Fairview as well and another minor and student, were rushed to Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center for treatment.

Ecija cops in shootout with carjackers cited

MUNOZ, Nueva Ecija o Eight police officers who shot it out with five suspected car thieves last week were conferred the ‘MedalyangKagalingan’ by  Philippine National Police chief Director General Ricardo Marquez in Camp Crame, Quezon City.

Awarded for their heroic acts were Supt. PoncianoZafra, SPO4 Edwin Batulay, PO1 Manny Apuyao, PO1 John Gerald Tugas, PO1 Victor Galaites, PO1 Wifredo Castro and PO1 Loyd Corpuz.

Zafra and his men were manning a Comelec checkpoint when they chanced upon the suspects, who were all killed during the encounter. Two stolen vehicles were also recovered from them. Zafra was appointed Muñoz police chief barely three months prior to the incident. -- Mar T. Supnad

Cop shot dead by elderly man

MANGALDAN, Pangasinan — A local police officer was gunned down by a 75-year-old man who was stopped at the back of the public market in this town last Friday for violating the Commission on Elections gun ban. Senior Police Officer 2 Ronald Allan P. Tiu, 43, was approaching Felix Alvares, a pedicab driver, in a bid to disarm him when the suspect suddenly shot the lawman in the chest and abdomen. Three nabbed for gun ban violation

BAGUIO CITY -- Three persons were nabbed here Feb. 2 around 1:40 a.m. after they were spotted by  police mobile car  roaming around Quirino highway, San Roque Village. The van was spotted parking in a suspicious area where three passengers were identified. With the driver’s side window open, authorities approached and inspected the vehicle and noticed that a firearm was thrown at the back of the van. A Cal. 22 was found and the three passengers were arrested and are currently under interrogation.

23 violate gun ban in Cordillera

CAMP DANGWA, La Trinidad, Benguet — A total of 23 individuals were added to the list of arrested gun ban violators at Commission on Elections checkpoints set up by the Police Regional Office-Cordillera in this region. Among those who have violated the gun ban was Department of Education (DepEd) employee, Cristino M. Faustino, 40, of La Trinidad, this province, who was arrested inside a bar near Keno Lotto outlet in Barangay Upper Tomay last Feb. 4. He yielded an Armscor .45-caliber pistol.

Man slays sister-in-law over land

SAN CARLOS CITY, Pangasinan — A 37-year-old housewife was stabbed to death in front of her neighborhood store Feb. 6 allegedly by her 52-year-old brother-in-law in Barangay Tarece, here, police said.

Killed was MarlynAbrillio, a college graduate, and married to a brother of the suspect, Angel Agbuya, a member of a local socio-civic group in his hometown of Malasique, this province.

Probers said Agbuya engaged his sister-in-law in an argument over a property around 3:30 p.m. while she was tending to her store.

As the argument escalated, Agbuya allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Abrillio repeatedly, until she fell on the ground. She was later rushed to the nearby Blessed Family Doctors General Hospital, but pronounced dead on arrival. --LiezleBasaInigo

44 nabbed for gun ban violation in Ilocos

CAMP FLORENDO – At least 44 people have been arrested and 30 deadly weapons seized in the Ilocos region since the election gun ban was implemented on Jan. 9.

Chief Supt. Ericson Velasquez, acting police director for Ilocos region, said 41 of those arrested were civilians, two government employees and a police officer.

Velasquez said among the seized items were nine high-powered firearms and four grenades.

He said 29 were arrested in Pangasinan and five each in La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte.

“We are expecting more arrests as we increase our efforts and implement Lambat-Sibat and other anti-crime measures… This is to ensure safe and secure elections in Region 1,” Velasquez said. – Eva Visperas
