Cagayan forest rangers fired at by illegal loggers

BAGGAO, Cagayan – The lives of three
forest rangers here were threatened after suspected illegal loggers fired shots
at them at the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO)
checkpoint in Barangay Santa Margarita last Jan. 21.
Report from the office from the Baggao Information Office showed Mario Mamanao, Pablito Pascual and Dennis Villanueva were manning the MENRO checkpoint in Barangay Santa Margarita here at around 11 p.m. when they were fired upon by still unidentified gunmen.
Witnesses saw the suspects onboard a blue motorcycle without license plates fire at the forest rangers six times.
No one was hurt in the incident.
According to MENRO, there have been three similar incidents, also in Barangay Santa Margarita, that were reported in 2019 and 2020.
Authorities said they would investigate the incident and provide security for MENRO members.
