677 participate in MP jobs fair
BONTOC, Mountain Province – A total of 677 applicants filed their applications and were interviewed by representatives of the Department of Labor and Employment here during the simultaneous nationwide jobs fair conducted by the Department of Public Works and Highways on Feb. 23.
Nine local contractors participated during the event here at the Engineering District Office. Contractors were RIM Construction, Chico Engineering Construction, Gapongli Construction, PBO Construction, Likayan Construction, Millicent Construction, Midnorth Construction, Bontoc Builders Construction and Thunderblast Ventures.
Of the total applicants, 253 were hired by the DPWH. Thunerblast Ventures interviewed 35 applicants, Bontoc Builders Construction interviewed 30 and Midnorth Construction interviewed 25 but these applicants were scheduled for further interview.
Job openings needed by local contractors were drivers, machine operators, foremen, skilled and unskilled laborers.
The nationwide jobs fair is part of President Arroyo’s job generation program aimed to provide gainful employment to workers displaced/affected by the current global recession; to provide fiscal stimulus to spur economic growth in the locality; and to reduce percentage of unemployment nationwide.
The DPWH entered into a memorandum of agreement with the DOLE, the National Construction Association of the Philippines and the Philippine construction association to provide employment.
In the memorandum, the DPWH would serve as conduit between contractors and job applicants.
It assesses job seeker’s capabilities and work assignment and matches them with the needs of contractors while the DOLE was tasked to ensure that the hired workers’ rights, salaries and other benefits were well protected. -- Juliet B. Saley
