Killer quake survivor gives scholarships to poor students

BAGUIO CITY – A survivor of the July 16, 1990 killer quake who was trapped at the former Hyatt Hotel here which collapsed that time is thanking the Lord for his life by giving scholarships to poor students.

He started the Ray Anthony Olarte Scholarship Foundation, he named after himself, now a humanitarian foundation.

Lately, the RAOSF has chosen its scholar for school years 2009 to 2014.

Jonathan Libatique, a first year civil engineering student at the University of Baguio, the recipient, is a graduate of the Baguio City National High School.

His father, Edwin Libatique is a security guard while his mother, Amy, is a housewife.
The Foundation’s first scholar, Cory Am “Aidyl” Soriano finished B.S. Accountancy from the Saint Louis University last year.

She took and passed the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) board examinations the year she graduated.

She now works at the Pag-Ibig fund office here.

Olarte, his benefactor is a “Baguio boy” who went abroad after the earthquake which devastated Baguio.

He was sent to Aruba, an island in the Caribbean which is part of the Dutch Antilles.

Olarte, an OFW success story wants to give back and share his blessings with the Baguio community by way of educational assistance to needy but talented youths.

He is back in Baguio and plans to engage in business. He is married to Dra. Annie Urmaza.--- Bong Cayabyab and Farah Agunos
