UN-Habitat, Candon execs launch project for homeless

CANDON CITY – Poor families of a despressed baragay here have reason to be happy this Christmas.

Mayor Allen G. Singson with House deputy speaker Eric D. Singson and UN- Habitat officially launched project Shepherd Home for the Homeless here last week at Barangay Darapidap.

Candon was among 15 cities nationwide identified by the league of cities, UN– Habitat and the Local Government Academy as FACES beneficiary (Family-based Action for Children and their Environs in the Slum).

Project Shepherd-Shelter for the Homeless is an integrated approach to address poverty which is a response mechanism to “millennium development goals.”

It is also a showcase of partnership between government, private/business sector, non-government organizations, volunteer groups and the citizenry in mobilizing resources toward a common goal.

The objective of the project is to construct housing for the initial 40 – beneficiaries from Darapidap and provide basic facilities such as water system, sanitary toilets and electricity.

It will also provide livelihood and employment assistance and ensure peace and order, safety and health of the beneficiaries.

House Deputy Speaker Singson released P100,000 for the first twenty beneficiaries as livelihood assistance.

Mayor Singson also released initial funds for construction of the housing units.
