BAGUIO CITY -- Mayor and congressional candidate Peter Rey Bautista approved the temporary closure of Session Road on April 22, the Lake Drive and Juan Luna Street on April 24 and 25.
Earth Day is being celebrated on April 22 and the whole length of Session Rd will be used for the different community activities.
The road will be closed from 6:00 in the morning until 6:00 in the evening. Mayor Bautista deemed it right and proper to close the road to vehicular traffic to minimize pollution, since there are activities along the stretch.
RA 7160 states that "any national or local road...may be temporarily closed during emergency or fiesta celebration.."
Since assuming office, Bautista has closed Session Road every Earth Day to encourage and remind Baguio folk to take note of what has been happening to our environment and to be active particpants in protecting the environment.
Activities in the recent years include a parade, exhibits of biodegradable materials and children drawing on the road that expresses their sentiments on how to protect and save the environment.
Meanwhile, on April 24 and 25, the third 100k International Ultra Marathon Train Running Event will start and end Burnham Park. This activity will need the closure of the Lake Drive and Juan Luna Street, where well-wishers will also be seen. Co-sponsored by the City Government and Northface, the activity will test the endurance of more than 1,000 challengers from Baguio andBenguet. The route of the 100k endurance run will include La Trinidad, Itogon, Sablan and Tuba.
Organizers said the last two challenges in Batangas and Subic were entirely different compared to the Baguio-Benguet challenge due to our unique terrain. The Baguio-Benguet route may be as long as the last but a little more difficult. This is what makes this year' challenge more exciting.
The activity is aimed to promote eco-tourism in Baguio and Benguet as participants and their family members from out of town are expected to flock the city to take advantage of the nature trip which include kayaking, trekking, spelunking, rappelling and ATV trail riding.
