Confidence is the single biggest factor for success in the learning process. This is not to say that learners with confidence have it all so easy or that success is more less assured. But it brings to the table learners with low self-esteem have less opportunity for learning.

Learners who believe in their abilities are more courageous and independent. Thus, they are the ones who experience and learn things outside the classroom. They get the part not because they are the best but because they audition for it.

Confident learners are also not afraid to fail and make mistakes. When they do, they bounce back easily, having learned their lesson. They are resilient, persistent, and motivated to learn and keep working.
Here are some strategies in building self-confidence:

Let them be
Don’t impose too many restrictions and obstacles as these will only impair their self-confidence. It does not matter if they stumble as long as they are in a safe environment. Giving your children the freedom to be who they are and do activities that they like while ensuring their safety is a sure fire way to develop confidence.

Keep them healthy
Healthy children are more active. They have the energy to join organizations, play sports and participate in extra-curricular activities which can up their confidence level a notch. Guide them to follow the right rules in taking and doing something to maintain their health status.

Let them work
Most parents love and care with pampering and spoiling. Children need to work to get sense of accomplishment and they are happy with praise or appreciated. The more task they successfully complete, they more they will trust their abilities. Make sure that you give them tasks that are within their means. Asking them to do more than they are capable will only frustrate them. Avoid too much command and supervision while they are doing their task.

Give them choices
Children must have rooms to make decisions. That way, they will feel that they are important and what they say has merit. You can start small by asking them to decide where to eat and what disk to have with dinner. Give them the freedom to join in some good organizations, religious activities, sports activities and educational tour with the proper guidance of the teacher.

Positive reinforcement
Encourage children to continue what you appreciated and admired. You don’t even need to rely on material things. Your children need your thumbs up, the words good, thank you, God Bless, love you and others. They need positive approaches and they enjoy positive actions and remarks.

It is therefore recommended that the strategies in stirring up self confidence among school learners be observed in the classroom and in the school environment or premises. It will surely give its positive share in the learning process. School children will be challenge, motivated, active, flexible and responsible.

Learning will be interesting and meaningful in a child friendly school atmosphere if they have self confidence. The primary role of the teacher in building learners’ self confidence is to show ability to gain their trust. Develops personal relationship with learners and their immediate family and the community as well. Display wide experience in handling learner’s behavior and situations. Be a part in building learners’ self confidence.
