BAGUIO CITY – A business tycoon has recently signified his intention to support completion of the multi-million 21-km Baguio circumferential road project by allowing a portion of the road to pass through his property at Balacbac, Sto. Tomas Proper here.

However, Ireneo S. Gallato, city district engineer of the Department of Public Works and Highways said representatives of Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco requested the agency to adjust the width of the road that will traverse his property so that it will minimize the portion of the property that will be occupied by the road.

Gallato said funds for the project were available for implementation.

Engineer CesarioRillera, chief of the DPWH-Baguio construction division, who initially represented the office in the negotiations for the acquisition of a portion of Cojuangco’s property, said the camp of the business tycoon was supportive of the project and that he was willing to give in.

For this year, the DPWH has set aside P140 million from its regular fund to push through with the remaining uncompleted works linking the city’s western link in the Irisan area to the eastern link at the Happy Hallow area.

According to Gallato, the funds will be utilized to purchase affected road-right-of-way claims within the Sto. Tomas proper, Bakakeng Norte/Sur, Bakakeng Central and Camp 7 barangays, paving of the road surface, construction of appropriate slope protection walls and drainage systems to help ensure that the road will be of good quality when completed.

Considering that the project which was supposed to be completed in the year 2002 has been delayed for nearly ten years now and that the cost of materials have already gone up several foods over the past years, Gallato revealed the total completion of the 21-km circumferential road project has been moved to next year with another P100 million budget to ensure that all projects will be undertaken for convenient travel around the city which will help boost the city’s sagging tourism industry.

The construction of the road aims to provide convenient travel for local residents and visitors wanting to go from the western link to the eastern link or vice versa without passing through the monstrous traffic jams along the city’s central business district area.

The circuit road traverses the Naguilian road going down to the Baguio-Asin road and turn left to the Sta. Lucia property and exit at the Suello village along Marcos Highway. Once in the area, motorists could opt to take the Santo-Tomas proper, Bakakeng Norte/Sur, Bakakeng Central and Camp 7 road links before moving up to the Loakan road up to the Camp John Hay area and Happy Hallow barangay before making an exit at the Baguio Country Club village and towards the Pacdal area.
