BAGUIO CITY—Following implementation last week of the P0.50 provisional fare increase in Metro Manila and other parts of the country except Regions 1, 2 and the Cordillera Region, operators and drivers in Baguio City and nearby areas are now also seeking that this be applied in the area in the meantime that their proposed fare hike is not yet acted upon.
1-United Transport Koalition vice president Perfecto Itliong Jr. said that the transport sector in North Luzon particularly in Baguio and Benguet area is also asking the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) for a provisionary fare increase of P.50 for public utility jeepneys.
Itliong said that they have asked the LTFRB for a P2.00 increase considering the type of terrain and roads in the Cordillera, but this will take time for the LTFRB to act on the proposal due to the long process of hearings.
“Habang hinihearing ang dalawang pisong increase, ung 50 centavos ay maimplement
na para hindi na maghirap pa ang mga tsuper natin,” said Itliong.
The provisionary increase will make the regular fare from P8.50 to P9.00 and from P6.75 to P7.25 for students, senior citizens and persons with disability.
Itliong said that the P0.50 provisionary increase is not enough for the continuing increase of oil prices but this will also help the struggling drivers and operators in the region.
Jeepney operators and drivers have already started a signature campaign that they will be attaching to their requests of fare increase and to be submitted to the LTFRB.
He added taxi operators have also submitted a proposed P10.00 increase in the taxi fare in the city.
Meanwhile, Itliong shared the sentiment of Bayan Muna Party List Representative Teddy Casino during a visit in Baguio City last week, that the PantawidPasada program is not the solution in the continuing increase of oil prices, instead the government should look into reforming the oil industry and revoking the expanded value added tax on oil prices.
