‘Piso para sa Chico’ campaign launched

TABUK CITY, Kalinga -- The campaign to save the Chico River from pollution is gaining ground with the recent launching  of a volunteer donation project to stop the practice of settlers along the river  making the waterway  garbage dumping site.

The campaign was launched to draw support to save the river which is the main fishing ground, water rafting and source of irrigation of farmlands here and in Cagayan and Isabela.

Collection cans were passed during the launching  program wherein everybody dropped P1 coins to start the ball rolling.

The cans will eventually reach schools, offices and business establishments.

National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) provincial director NatividadSugguiyao announced the agreement arrived at during the Provincial Development Council meeting to file writ of Kalikasan against local government units that continue to dump garbage along the river.

Cognizant to economic contributions of the water system to people, the  body agreed to make the people aware that resources the river is giving them have to be preserved before it’s too late considering that mercury and other toxic materials were being dumped in the river.
