Illegal gambling rampant in Baguio

BAGUIO CITY – Even as jueteng is in full operation here, gambling dens operating in public locations in the city continue to defy anti-gambling groups and Catholic Church authorities who are wondering why government officials like the police can’t stop these.

The gambling dens, reportedly sanctioned by some barangay officials and “masquerading as bingo socials fund-raising activities” are operating despite a directive from  Mayor Mauricio Domogan banning all kinds of non-family oriente4d games even in barangays, parks and public places.

Slaughter Compound has bingo den reportedly financed by a lowlander raking in bettors’ money supposedly for noble “barangay improvement projects.”

Located in Barangay Sto. Niño, the area is a favorite “location” of bingo operators because of its strategic location at the Central Business District.

The barangay  that holds its annual fiesta starting November to February, has become a perfect front for gambling operations at its covered multi-purpose building at the village’s entrance.
Another operation of bingo-socials fund drive is being operated along Otek St. here, almost a stone's throw away from the Baguio City Hall and Baguio City police.

From time to time, its operations are stopped by officials when complaints and media reports reach them.  Most of the time however, its operation is left untouched.

For two weeks now, the operation at the Slaughter Compound has also not been noticed by police, even as Baguio City police Director Senior Supt. Jesus Cambay said he will not give clearance for these kinds of activities.
