Bontoc folks elect indigenous rep

BONTOC, Mountain Province -- The municipal
Indigenous Peoples Representative was recently elected after the municipal
government in coordination with the National Commission on Indigenous People
and Department of Interior and Local Government convened with five indigenous
people’s representatives per barangay for final selection of municipal IPR.
Elected municipal IPR was Esteban Nguddo of
barangay Balili who shall assume office after taking his oath for the
post.
Among candidates earlier aspiring for
municipal indigenous representative were
Napoleon Limmayog from Bontoc Ili, Ciriaco Filog from Poblacion,
Josephine Masegman from Samoki, Joe Aniwasal from Tocucan, Esteban Nguddo from
Balili, and Rufino Bortikey from Bayyo.
Prior to the final selection, a consultation
was conducted by representatives from DILG with Association of Barangay
Captains president Bryan Bellang and those from 15 barangays on the matter.
Criteria for IPR was knowledge on historical
background of their barangay, municipality and Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act.
A total of 80 representatives per barangay
were present for the selection of a municipal representative wherein 16
representatives were chosen per barangay.
But out of the 16 IPRs, only six were
interested for the position while the other 10 declined their candidacy.
