DOST to open scholarships for 3rd year college studes

BONTOC, Mountain Province -- The Department of Science and Technology will be accepting application of scholarship for the regular third year college students starting July until Sept. 9.
This was announced by DOST-Cordillera assistant regional director for technical services Nancy Bantog during their Technology Caravan here.
To qualify for this scholarship, an applicant  must be Filipino citizen; incoming regular third year college student in an identified priority science and technology (S & T) courses for school year 2016 -0 2017; has a general weighted average of at least 83% or its equivalent in his/her first and second years in college; must be of good moral character and in good health.
The applicant must pass the DOST – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI)’s Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) exam which will be administered on October 16, 2016
The JLSS is a scholarship program under Republic Act No. 10612, “An Act Expanding the coverage of the Science and Technology Scholarship Program and Strengthening the Teaching of Science and Mathematics in Secondary Schools.”
Known as “Fast-Tracked S & T Scholarship Act of 2013,” this scholarship which is being implemented by the SEI, Philippine Normal University and the Department of Education  aims to strengthen the country’s science and technology education by hastening learning of graduates in science, mathematics, and engineering.
The DOST aims to provide scholarship that will finance the education of talented and deserving students in their third year of college and pursuing a degree in the areas of science and technology; and provide incentives for them to pursue a career in teaching in high schools specially in their home region.
Qualifiers   will be entitled to subsidy in tuition and other school fees, monthly living allowance, book allowance, among others.

Upon graduation, the scholars are required to teach full-time high school subjects in mathematics, Biology, Chemistry or Physics; or Information Technology, both in the university- vocational tracks in the secondary education curriculum, in a public or private high school in their home province. -- Juliet B.
