SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union --  Dr. Maritess B. Beñas, manager  of the Philippine Information Agency in Abra, topped the first Global Pinoy Short Story Writing Competition in English launched and sponsored by De Francia Awards for Literature (DEAL).
DEAL is managed by Dr. Clarito G. De Francia from Manaoag, Pangasinan who is now based in California, USA.
This newly launched awards body for literature aims to unearth potentials and urge Filipino writers all over the world to write more of their cultural heritage, their failures and pains that lead to success stories and noteworthy life lessons.
Beñas’  winning piece, ‘The Chase’ is  a story of a young couple who, against all odds, ran after time to work together to disprove the world that they can make their married life a success and provide  their children the best they can,  and  be of service to others at the same time. The wife suffered loss of her love life, but worked hard and selflessly to continue giving a good future for their children. The fruits of her sacrifices were reaped beyond expectations, but still challenged with life's realities, the chase goes on.
Beñas said this was her first time to join short story competition though she grew up with writing as her passion and hobby.
She was a writer in high school and college in their school organ and had a number of her literary works such as poems and essays published in magazines and books.
The screening of winners from 15 entries was rigorous with Dr. Aurelio S. Agcaoili, a well-known professor and award-winning writer, as chairman of the panel of judges.
Tabula rasa or empty tablet was used as rubrics in the judging and selection of winners. Each story earns points per rubric starting from zero.
There were no declared winners for the 1st and 2nd prizes. Beñas garnered 3rd place.
Crispin Dannug from Isabela, retired assistant regional director of Department of Labor and Employment and Hermilinda Lingbaoan-Bulong, a veteran writer were 4th and 5th placers respectively.
The winning pieces are now owned by DEAL and these will be published in DEAL books.
