Man asleep killed by driverless truck

AGUINALDO, Ifugao -- A drunk man sleeping on the side of a road here was killed Tuesday around 7 p.m. after being hit by a wayward truck left unattended with the engine on making it move downhill.

The victim was identified as Anej-char Bakichan, 30, married, who was hit by the white Elf truck bearing plate number WER 778, registered under the name of Zenaida Tinimbang of Talaba, Bacoor, Cavite and driven by Allan Bocan Chawagan, 42, married here of of Barangay Monggayang.

 A certain SPO1 Lachaona called the PNP hotline of Aguinaldo police station earlier saying the driver of the elf truck parked the vehicle at the shoulder of the road to unload a cow, without switching off the engine.

Investigation disclosed the driver alighted to look for a stone to stop the wheel from moving but while looking, the truck slowly descended road until it bumped the victim who asleep along the shoulder of the road. The helper of the truck, a certain Dante Binlayan Chinag-a, 45 of Monggyang, saw the incident and called the assistance of passersby and  nearby Ubao police patrol base.

Police and concerned citizens rescued the victim and brought him to Potia District Hospital for treatment but he was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending physician.

Chawagan, the driver and the elf truck are under the custody of Aguinaldo police. Charges were prepared against him while cadaver of the victim was taken by his family for funeral service.
