CONNER, Apayao – The
National Economic and Development Agency Cordillera and Mountain Province State
Polytechnic College conducted another provincial consultation on the mapping
and marking of historical sites in the Cordillera at the Apayao State College here
last Oct.10.
The
consultation provided additions to the ongoing list of historical sites in the
Cordillera.
Initial
potential sites for historical marking are the famous Mataguisi Church Ruins in
Pudtol as symbol of early Spanish occupation in Apayao, and the Talipugu
primary school in Kabugao the site of the first school in Apayao. Also being
considered is the Marag valley which was an infamous training ground for NPA
combatants during the martial law era.
Others being
considered are the municipality of Luna which is rich in historical sites and
the Ripang Church in Conner which served as a refuge for key personalities who
fought for the Cordillera’s self-determination.
The MPSPC
agreed to set up interviews with local experts to validate the proposed sites.
This will be finalized in a regional consultation workshop sometime in
November.
The RDC-funded project aims to map and mark
sites in the Cordillera that have significant relation to the struggle for self-determination.
NEDA and MPSPC have partnered to make this project possible and provide the
region with an enhanced sense of regional identity.
