BAGUIO CITY –
The National Economic and Development Agency Cordillera (NEDA-CAR) and Mountain
Province State Polytechnic College (MPSPC) are set to complete the mapping and
marking of historical sites throughout the region.
Through the Social Preparation
of CAR into an Autonomous Region (SPCAR program), NEDA and MPSPC have partnered
in this endeavor to increase awareness in key of cultural and historical
landmarks among Cordillerans, particularly the youth.
NEDA-CAR Regional
Director Milagros Rimando said the intention of the project is “to promote our
unique and rich cultural and historical identity and to deepen the
understanding of the youth on the Cordillera’s bid for autonomy”.
Through a series of
ongoing provincial consultations, site visits, key informant interviews,
Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping, and research validation,
MPSPC aims create a comprehensive map of
historical events that shape Cordillera identity and the region’s struggle for
self-determination.
Previously, provincial
consultations in Kalinga, Abra and Mountain Province were held in 2017.
Consultations were first done in these provinces as these were the sites of
many significant events related to the Cordilleran struggle for
self-determination in the 70s and the 80s.
The consultations in
Apayao and Ifugao concluded last October 10 and 15, respectively.
The
Benguet provincial consultation will be conducted this October. A regional
consultation will be held for final consolidation of all historical Cordilleran
sites before the placement of the actual historical markers on-site.
