7 PMA cadets, 2 doctors face charges over killing
BAGUIO CITY – Seven
upper-class cadets of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) and two doctors of
the military institution have been tagged as responsible for the death of 4th
Class Cadet Darwin Dormitorio, and will be facing criminal charges under the Anti-Hazing
Law.
Baguio City
police chief Col. Allen Rae Co said they were ready to file the charges but
were just waiting for the victim’s eldest brother Dexter to represent the
Dormitorio family to join the legal action as private complainants.
Co said the
family was well informed of every development in the ongoing investigation
pertaining to their kin’s death.
“The family
assured me that they will be in Baguio City later in the week,” he said.
Co identified
those to be charged as 3rd Class Cadets Shalimar Imperial, Felix M. Lumbag Jr.,
John Vincent Manalo, Julius Carlo Tadena, Rey David John Volante; 2nd Class
Cadet Christian Zacarias, and 1st Class Cadet Axl Rey Sanopao.
The two
doctors who will be charged for criminal negligence will be Capt. Flor Apple Apostol
and Major Ofelia Beloy from PMA Station Hospital for their alleged wrong
diagnosis on Dormitorio.
“He was not
properly diagnosed, especially on the September 17 hospitalization and the
following Dormitorio died,” said Co.
From an
initial three names as suspects, two more were added on September 26. Another
one was added on September 27 and another name was added over the weekend.
Co said the
continuing investigation allowed them to weave together the testimony of 18
witnesses – 14 cadets and four officials, into a clear picture of what happened
to Dormitorio, as well as the complicity of each of the suspects.
22 nabbed for drugs; P 20.2 M marijuana bricks seized
LA TRINIDAD, Benguet --
Some 22 persons, three of them minors, were arrested in the Cordillera even as
P20.2 marijuana were destroyed in Benguet and Kalinga last week.
This, as 66
sachets of suspected shabu and 31 bricks of marijuana worth P3.2 million were
also confiscated in the region last week.
In Tabuk
City, Kalinga, four men were arrested at a checkpoint at Talaca,
Agbannawag evening of Sept. 28.
Nabbed were
Joseph Caluma Saldana, and three minors, all residents of Antipolo,
Rizal, who were aboard a PUJ when the same was flagged down by the police.
Some 31
bricks of dried marijuana leaves and stalks worth P3,720,000 were
reportedly confiscated from them.
In Baguio
City, six persons were caught having pot session along Avelino Street
Barangay Andres Bonifacio on Sept. 24.
They are
identified as: Dan Allen O. Abellera aka Danny, 37; Mario M.
Cariaga; Ricardo S. Capilitan; Romeo M. Salting; Christopher C.
Antero; and Maria S. Capilitan.
Their arrest
was made possible after one of their companions named as Jovan B.
Genove was caught in a buy-bust operation and revealed the pot
session.
Confiscated
from Genove were 10 sachets of suspected shabu, buy-bust money and drug
paraphernalia.
On the same
day, drug pushers Jeson Aquino Pertubal, 29 and Jaime Asqata
Apellido 36 were arrested in separate operations.
Pertubal was
apprehended in the afternoon at Maharlika Livelihood Complex Parking Lot,
Baguio City, where two sachets of suspected shabu, buy-bust money and drug
paraphernalia were confiscated from his possession.
Meanwhile,
Apellido was seized in Pico, La Trinidad, Benguet. Three sachets
containing suspected shabu, one cell phone and P1,000 were seized from him.
The Baguio
City Police Office recorded the most number of arrested drug suspects.
City cops
apprehended 15 persons, followed by Benguet Police Provincial Office with two
and Abra PPO with one arrest.
Regional
police director Brig. Gen. Israel Ephraim Dickson cited arresting officers
saying all drug personalities in the
region will be “neutralized.”
Meanwhile, some
P20.2 million worth of marijuana were burned by lawmen in Benguet and Kalinga
last week.
Marijuana
plants and seedlings worth more than P311,000 were destroyed in Bakun, Benguet
on Sept. 26 and 27.
Another
P212,000 worth was destroyed in Kibungan, also in Benguet on Sept. 23 and 24.
In Kalinga,
policed and members of Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency destroyed 80,000
marijuana plants and 30 kilograms of dried marijuana leaves in separate
operations in Tanudan town on Sept. 23 and Tinglayan town from Sept. 25 to 27.
The
operations in Kalinga yielded a total of P19.9 million.
No suspects
were arrested in the operations, police said.
In Bontoc,
Mt. Province, two bricks of marijuana hashish covered by milled coffee sent
through a delivery service was foiled when personnel opened a box for checking
before delivery on Sept. 25.
The suspect
was not arrested, police said.
In Tinglayan,
Kalinga, a two-day joint operation by the Philippine National Police and
Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency resulted in the uprooting and burning of P9
million worth of marijuana plants here recently.
The PNP and
PDEA conducted operations on Sept. 26 to 27 in Barangay Tulgao West and Bugnay.
According to
PSMSgt. Alex Tambalong, 77,000 fully-grown marijuana were uprooted from more
than 5,000 square meters of land in the two barangays.
Operatives
also recovered 30 kilos of dried marijuana leaves.
However,
there were no cultivators arrested during the two-day operation.
Man nabbed in Bauko for gun, bullets, drugs
BAUKO, Mountain Province
– A man was arrested here Tuesday in his residence for illegal gun, firearms
and drugs. Nabbed by virtue of search warrant was Elmer Adolfo
Pakyas, 30, of Sadsadan Trail.
Confiscated
from him were a Cal. 22 pistol and magazine for the gun loaded with bullets and
sachet containing shabu.
Manaoag
resident held in Baguio for gun, bullets
BAGUIO CITY – A certain
Nelson Rivera Villanueva, 62, of Manaoag, Pangasinan was
arrested here at No. 13G St. Purok 22, San Carlos Heights, Irisan Tuesday
morning for illegal firearm and bullets. Seized from him were Cal. 45 handgun
and two magazines with eight bullets.
Bail denied to drug suspect
BAGUIO CITY – A resident
here named as Yun Gerold Latorre Yango, 25, was arrested at No. 183
Sector 7, Dominican Hill, Wednesday for illegal drugs. Bail was denied the
suspect by the judge.
3 nabbed in Sablan for gambling
SABLAN, Benguet -- Three
persons were arrested after a concerned citizen reported to police of an
ongoing illegal gambling activity at the residence of one of the bettors here
in Calot, Banangan Tuesday night. Arrested were Emmanuel Baloy De Leon,
64; Dolores Tapiador Palaci, 63 and Julieta Palomado Abaring, 52.
Operatives confiscated playing cards and P1,350 bet money from the suspects.
Worker captured for attempted homicide
ITOGON, Benguet – A
worker was arrested here Thursday for attempted homicide. Nabbed at
Gumatdang was
Orbel Waclin Badongen, 34, resident of Kelly Mines, Gumatdang. The arrest was
made by virtue of warrant issued by Judge Leody M. Opolinto of MTC, Baguio City
who set bail of ₱120,000 for the suspect’s temporary liberty.
Secu fires shotgun; agency exec hit
BAGUIO CITY – A security
guard accidentally fired a shotgun at city hall here Thursday which resulted to
injuries of the executive assistant of the agency he was working for.
The incident
happened in the security base of GMT Interlink Security Agency located at the
ground floor.
Wounded was
Mabel Dongla, 31, resident of km 3, La Trinidad, Benguet.
Investigation
disclosed security guard Gelvicly Estacio Bangibang, 35 years old, married,
security guard of GMT Interlink Sec. Agency was cleaning his issued 12 gauge
shotgun when it accidentally discharged. Pellets hit the tile floor and the
foot of Dongla was hit. The victim was brought to Baguio General Hospital and
Medical Center for treatment while Bangibang was brought to Police station.
Baguio cops trace estafa suspect in Olongapo
OLONGAPO CITY – Baguio
police traced and arrested a woman here Monday at the Papagayo Beach Resort.
Nabbed for estafa was Chryshainna B. Barrientos after Judge Leody Opolinto of
MTCC, Branch. 3, Baguio City issued warrant for her arrest. The judge set
P12,000 bail for the suspect’s temporary liberty. Cops brought back Barrientos to Baguio.
1 killed as van slams pedestrians in Pugo
PUGO, La Union – A
16-year-old boy was killed, while two others were injured, when a delivery van
plowed through them along the Pugo-Rosario road in Barangay San Luis here Sept.
29.
Killed was
Jericho P. Baylosis, 16, while injured were Bayani D. Dela Cruz, 60, Diosdado
V. Dulay, 50, both farmers and residents of San Luis, Pugo. They are now at the
Rosario District Hospital for medical treatment.
According to
the police, the van, driven by Diosdado D. Urbano, was travelling along
Pugo-Rosario road when it tried to avoid a passenger bus which had suddenly
stopped on the middle of the road to pick up its inspector.
The van
swerved to the opposite lane and crossed into the pedestrian pavement, hitting
the victims.
It crashed
into a metallic barrier before stopping on its side.

Man held for reckless imprudence, injuries
TUBA, Benguet – A man
was arrested here Sept. 30 at Barangay Yagyagan for reckless imprudence
resulting to physical injuries. Nabbed was Salvador Wakit Martin after warrant
was issued against him by Judge Roberto R. Mabalot of MTCC Branch 1, Baguio
City who set bail of P20,000 for the suspect’s temporary liberty.
Man arrested in Hingyon for violence
HINGYON, Ifugao – A
certain Johnny B. Pagaddut was arrested here Monday for violation of Republic
Act 9262 (violence against women and children) here at Maabat, Namulditan. This
after Judge Romeo U. Habbiling of RTC, Branch 14, Lagawe issued warrant against
him and setting bail of P72,000 for the suspect’s temporary liberty.
Baguio drivers, operators protest, air woes in rally
BAGUIO CITY – Around 200
drivers and operators held a rally here Monday opposing phase-out of jeepneys.
Participants of PUV national transport rally marched from Sunshine Park to Gov.
Pack Road going to People’s Park.
Police named
rally personalities as Carlito Wayas, Mike Cabangon, Marc Mendiola, Vicente
Dilem, Gauliver Sucte and Abegail Taningco. They also opposed franchise
consolidation and “corporate capture” of public transport.
Motorcycle
hits Fortuner
MANABO, Abra – A
motorcycle hit a Toyota Fortuner here Monday at Barangay Ayyeng. The Fortuner
was driven by Kanwaldeep Singh, 38, Indian national while the motorcycle was
driven by Sonny Boy E. Pacurza, 25.
Investigation
disclosed the Fortuner suddenly stopped to avoid bumping two children who were
crossing the road but was bumped by the motorcycle from behind. As a result,
the Fortuner and motorcycle were damaged. Both drivers were not injured and
settled the incident amicably.
Young man held in drug operation
BANGUED, Abra – A
certain Jessie Basa Rindon, 21 was captured by the police here in Zone 5
Wednesday during a buy-bust operation. Confiscated from his possession were
four transparent sachet containing suspected dried marijuana leaves; P1,000
marked money and tricycle.
4 drug suspects killed in Bulacan, Pampanga
Four persons were killed
in anti-drug operations in Bulacan and Pampanga recently.
Col. Chito
Bersaluna, Bulacan police director, said Roy Manabat, alias Pot-pot,
Edward Liban and Teodorico Perez shot it out with police officers in
Barangay Corazon, Calumpit; San Martin 4, San Jose del Monte and Pinagtulayan,
Norzagaray, respectively.
Bersaluna
said 35 sachets of shabu, two .38-caliber revolvers, a .22-caliber revolver,
drug paraphernalia and marked money were recovered from the fatalities.
He said 19
other drug suspects were arrested simultaneous drug busts in the province.
In Pampanga,
police said Bernarde Parico, kagawad of Barangay Betis, Guagua, drew his gun

Boy, 9, drowns in Candon City creek

CANDON, Ilocos Sur -- A
nine-year-old boy drowned while playing in a creek here in Barangay San Nicolas
on Sept. 29.
Police said
villagers pulled out Emmar Malabas from a deep portion of the water at around
4:45 p.m.
The boy was
pronounced dead on arrival at the Candon City Hospital.
In Isabela,
village watchman Thomas Baquiran, 62, drowned while trying to rescue his
relatives who were carried away by the strong current while swimming in a river
in Barangay Furao, Gamu.
Police said
Baquiran’s body was recovered in Cagayan River.
