606 Covid cases in Baguio; 12 deaths

BAGUIO CITY – Covid-19 cases continue to rise here with 27 more
recorded on Tuesday, September 22.
As of Sept. 22, the city had a total of 606 confirmed cases, 200 active, 394 recoveries and 12 deaths.
Mayor Benjamin Magalong said there could be more cases due to mass tests Sept. 17 to 19.
Of 27 new cases, 11 were contacts of current cases, 10 found out through expanded testing, four symptomatic, and two discovered for other reasons like pre-medical procedure requirement.
City information officer Aileen Refuerzo said the latest fatality was a 71-year-old female, who was confined at a hospital due to a comorbidity condition.
Refuerzo said, from the new cases, 13 were contacts of current patients, four were symptomatic, and one was detected through expanded testing.
Of the 13 patients from contact tracing, there were three minors – a six-week-old male, a four-year-old male, and a 10-year-old female.
The new patients were from Barangays Trancoville, Saint Joseph, Camp 7, Palma-Urbano (Carino-Palma), San Vicente and Balsigan.
Meanwhile, Magalong reported completion of training of new 40 contact tracers, while the Department of the Interior and Local Government has yet to complete the hiring of over 500 contact tracers for the Cordillera.
Magalong said the newly trained contact tracers have been fielded to allow the others to go for a break. The contact tracing program is a vital tool in COVID-19 control and in preventing the spread of the virus.
The city now has 781 contact tracers who are doctors, nurses, midwives, policemen, members of the Barangay Health Emergency Response Teams (BHERTS). They comprise the 40 teams that conduct the contact tracing of close contacts of positive patients.
“We will subscribe to the ‘hammer and dance’ principle in dealing with the virus,” he said.
He said “hammer means we will apply the necessary restrictions when cases increase, and dance, we will start opening up again when the surge lets up. This is going to be our cycle as we strive to live with the virus, and adapt to the new normal way of life.” Meanwhile. Magalong issued executive order 132, ordering the temporary closure and suspension of operations at the Baguio City Abattoir last Sept. 23 and 24 for disinfection.
The Baguio City Abattoir is located in Barangay Sto Nino Slaughter Compound where three Puroks were placed under hard lockdown after 38 persons residing in one house and community got infected with Covid-19, which started from abattoir workers living in the area.
The City Veterinarian and Agriculture Office which manages the city abattoir, identified several factors that contributed to community transmission in the barangay and recommended immediate suspension of operation for disinfection and Covid-19 tests of all workers.
