Abra bans entry of pigs, pork products

BANGUED, Abra – Entry and distribution of live pigs, pork
and pork products from outside the province was banned in the province to
protect the local swine industry from African Swine Fever (ASF).
The Sangguniang Panlalawigan recently enacted Provincial Ordinance No. 316 series of 2020, known as the “African Swine Fever Prevention Ordinance of Abra 2020.”
This prohibits the distribution, storing, trading, marketing, transporting, and sale of live pigs, pork and pork products originating outside the province and subject to outright confiscation and condemnation of seized items.
Dr. Jomar Sales of the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian said the provincial ordinance complements Executive Order No. 15 series of 2019 issued by Governor Joy Bernos banning the entry of pork products due to ASF that may high mortality rates among domestic pigs.
Violators of the ordinance will be penalized accordingly including revocation of license or permit and fine of not less than P5, 000 regardless of the quantity of the prohibited items found in their possession. For possessing 25 to 50 kilos of prohibited items, additional penalty is imprisonment of 3 to 6 months, and for over 50 kilos, imprisonment of 6 to 12 months.
Moreover, all persons aboard the vehicle used in transporting the prohibited items will be fined P5,000 each and said vehicle shall be impounded.
To date, there was no reported ASF in Abra. – PIA Abra
